I don’t know if it’s appeasement, but it sure ain’t good

One of the less reported aspects of President Bush’s trip to the Middle East last week was his agreement with Saudi Arabia to help them build nuclear reactors — including giving them enriched uranium!

Keep in mind this is the same Saudi Arabia that contributed 15 of the 19 hijackers.  This is the same Saudi Arabia that participates in the WTO-violating OPEC cartel that is in part responsible for spiralling gas prices.  And keep in mind the notion of Saudi Arabia having access to enriched uranium is only going to further escalate the nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

In return, the United States gets … nothing.  No assurances about increased oil supply.  No commitments to help stabilize Iraq by backing down their support for Sunni insurgents.  No tangible benefits at all!

Why would we possibly be going down this path?  I don’t know if it’s “appeasement”, but it sure ain’t good.
